No Apologies

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

The conslusion of “Last Comic Standing” caused me such distress that I wonder if the American people no longer understand what comedy entails. Let me clarify. Laughter should be the goal of a comedy routine. Chuckles imply a passing grade and smiles either hint to the fact a comic is just a few punchlines above the pass/fail mark or that the audience sees the camera pointed at their faces. Josh Blue’s stand-up may have caused me to smile slightly once or twice in the last few weeks, but by no means provoked laughter.* I can’t say I was shocked by the voting results of our country considering the current state of the States and the populace’s past voting trends, but I admit to feeling confused by the outcome. At one point in his routine Mr. Blue said something along the lines of “I get away with so much”. No kidding, I thought, he just may steal the title of “Last Comic Standing” from someone who actually performs comedy. And he did.

An hour later, still shaking my head from the above results show, I wondered if there was anything I could do to make things right; to feel as if my opinion mattered; to possibly encourage thoughtful analysis versus reflexive responses. So I voted for Travis on “So You Think You Can Dance?“.

*What did elicit a laugh from this dour girl, was the search for “clearance items for $0.82. and crazy pat” and “crazy pat and josh blue”. BlueSmirk.com: serving up results for those searching for the distinctive (Crazy Pat), the dull (Josh Blue) and the dead (Peter Tomarken).

What’s On, Again

Seriously, people, you really think Josh Blue’s material is that funny and his timing that flawless? Really? I do not think he will be the “Last Comic Standing” and I stand by my opinion after viewing the first episode that it will be Chris Porter.

I still have mixed feelings with the little dancer boys. It’s interesting how although it is a dance competition, their personalites come into play. Now, I for one am not saying this is necessarily fair. Not being strong in the personality department I would be angry if I was in some sort of contest judging a certain skill and discovered people were voting against me because I suck as a person. I think, though, the tagline for “So you think You Can Dance?” asks us to choose the most “entertaining dancer”, so in that respect personality can act as a criterion. Benji has showmanship down, but Travis tends towards the sensitive artist. Overall tonight I thought Travis was somewhat stronger. Benji danced the steps of hip-hop, but didn’t come across as authentic (yes, I realize this is not his forte). I did not enjoy either of his partner dances. I felt Donyelle’s weak performances tonight made me feel less than thrilled with them as a team. But Benji is a crowd pleaser… If I only had my Magic 8 ball pen.

A couple of years ago I found this Magic * Ball pen at Target. It was a clearance item for $0.82. Oh, how I loved my Magic 8 Ball pen. But time evaporated it’s spirit and the answers no longer flow freely to the surface. It’s as if he is raising up his hands and telling me to make the decision myself as he has given up. I know, old buddy, time ravages us all.
